Important Updates from the Social Security Administration (SSA) – 2025
Since early 2025, news about the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) new Identification Verification (IDV) procedures has caused confusion. SSA first announced changes to the retirement benefits application process, then reversed some of them on the day they were set to start. This created widespread uncertainty.
What Is the Identification Verification (IDV) Procedure?
The IDV procedure strengthens identity verification to prevent fraud and protect personal information.
Key Changes and Clarifications
- In March and early April, SSA said it would stop accepting retirement benefit applications by phone. Applicants would have needed to verify their ID in person at a local SSA office.
- However, on April 14, SSA canceled this change. You can still apply for benefits by phone without visiting an office.
- The main update now involves Direct Deposit (DD) information:
- If you have a My Social Security (MySSA) account, you can update your DD information online.
- If you request a DD change over the phone, you must visit an SSA office to verify your ID.
Why Creating a MySSA Account Matters
To visit an SSA office, you must make an appointment by phone. However, call wait times can be long—between two and four hours.
Setting up a MySSA account helps you avoid these delays.
If you or a family member has not yet created an account, we strongly recommend doing so. If someone you know is not comfortable with computers, consider helping them set up their account.
Changes to the Social Security Benefit Payment Schedule
SSA has also changed the benefit payment schedule, starting April 2025. Payment dates now depend on your birthday:
- Birthdays between the 1st and 10th: Payment on the second Wednesday
- Birthdays between the 11th and 20th: Payment on the third Wednesday
- Birthdays after the 21st: Payment on the fourth Wednesday
If you started receiving Social Security before 1997 or receive both SS and SSI, your schedule are as follows:
- SSI is paid on the 1st of the month.
- SS benefits are paid on the 3rd of the month.
Final Thoughts
Understanding these changes will help you avoid unnecessary trips, long phone calls, and missed payments.

Thank you for the message. If not much trouble, what is the process for citizens living abroad? Do I visit the consulate or embassy for IDV activation?
Thank you for your kind time and consideration.
Thank you for your question.
U.S. citizens living abroad usually do not need to visit a U.S. consulate to verify their identity for Social Security purposes. Identity verification is only required in certain cases—such as when changing bank information without a verified my Social Security account or during a random SSA audit.
The best approach is to create a “My Social Security” account using ID.me, which allows online identity verification, even from overseas.
